Photographing Pets

I want to do a portrait of my dog, a rescued greyhound. I haven't done anything like this before, so I'm looking for some pointers. Specifically, I'm wondering about backgrounds. Should I go for something that's busy in the background (like a park) or something less exciting, like a plain wall?

Thanks for all the suggestions!

You could always get the shot, then play around with the background after the fact. There are plenty of stock backgrounds to choose from, or you could even have shot your own then combine the two images.
