Cult classic

What makes for a great cult-classic in your opinion? Do you have any favorites? It seems like we haven't had one in recent years, but one my favorites from the past two decades is American Psycho. Christian Bale, as Patrick Bateman, nailed it. Literally. In one scene, he confessed to killing an ex with a nail gun.

I think Ready or Not and Knives Out are examples of recent cult classics. Or have they not been out long enough? Well. I would consider them cult classics anyway.

It's hard to determine what the makings are for a great cult classic. Sometimes it's the fact that the movie is so cheesy and so ridiculous that it generates a cult following. Sometimes the movie speaks to the issues of the day. Sometimes it's the star-studded cast that makes it unbelievably popular for years to come. My favorite cult classic is probably the Star Wars trilogy.
